we first started with our own waterfront land use plan and design and access element. we also looked at the embarcadero, not standards, which eventually -- hopefully the system will read as a single unit so you can travel from fisherman's wharf all the way over to herons head park and be on a single identifiable system. updating existing guidelines. we look at the city of oakland's waterfront trail. hudson river park in new york, and the blue waste plant in the city of vancouver, canada, and the one that most resembles our waterfront is the port of oakland's waterfront plan, which is a good example of some of the work that we can apply to the southern waterfront. as a part of best practices, we looked at sign it, how we can improve sign it to provide continuity on the system, site furnishings -- how we design and establish criteria for furnishings that are durable, made tenable, comfortable, and usable. and again, the idea of connections. how do we connect open spaces together down to the waterfront? a good example of this is in vancouver where they have lives that com

she had abandoned us for the glory of retirement, and she had left us with an amazing legacy of worked in the 18 years she has been with the port. it is incredible what all the she has done for this city and the port in her time. she joined in december of 1992. looks like a few days before christmas. i still wonder who does that, but jennifer did, and she came in the real estate division where she spent approximately six years, and then, she moved over to the planning and development commission where she spent the remaining 12 years. i'm 18 years she has been here, she has been promoted six times, so that is a great batting average. jennifer, congratulations. jennifer, as you know, is responsible on the port side for the project at 1.5, 3, and 5, which is spectacular. simon, wherever you are, we're taking all the credit for that project, so congratulations, wherever you are. also for the exploratory project that is coming to us at pier 15 and eventually 17, says she has as two great projects under her belt as well as numerous other tendencies and projects under the way. it is unimagina

i wanted to talk about the process we used. it is a process that alan and warrants developed a while ago because of the short timeframe, we had to jump on these amendments. we separate the code by discipline. we have four, five standing subcommittees. the amendments go directly to the subcommittee for their review. in some committees we have representatives of staff, general public, members of the fire department, so we can hide -- hammer out all of the details. once the said committee reviews those, they are moved to the full committee. that is when we review all other responses. basically, fire, life, safety, green building committee, mep, general, structural. i want to recognize a few of the individuals. allen and lawrence came up with the idea to run this to the subcommittee. kirk has followed through with that process. it really speeds things up because we can get to the amendment. frankly, i think kirk spend a few late-night evenings on the administration with it. i also want to point out, the department of the environmen

law offices in which we perform work for them when they have a conflict, and they perform work for us, usually at no cost. this arrangement has proven effective in ensuring that the city receives high-quality legal advice while at the same time minimizing the cost to the general fund or often at no cost to the general fund. we have arranged a year for three public entity law offices -- the open public city attorney's office, and san mateo county office -- to handle matters that directly involve the mayoral election campaign. again, we anticipate these will be relatively few matters. still, especially in these times, we would envision that the work would be spread among the three, rather than having one firm or one office shoulder the whole burden. there are three areas at work that we would envision that would be allocated -- campaign finance that is overseen by the ethics commission, elections matters overseen by the elections commission, and the third, mayoral succession, which will principally involve the board of supervisors. we have worked with oakland ethics attorneys for years,
